13 weeks in frame...

13 weeks of our babies in pictures - thank goodness for cell phones!

Nicknames that have evolved
Sebastian - Bash, Basher, Munchkin, Littlest Jones
Keegan - Keegs, Keegers, Keegalicious (middle of the night, but it sticks), Pumpkin, Littler Jones
Weston - Little Jones, Buddy
BIRTHDAY!!! 12/12/13 (6 weeks early)
living in the NICU, hooked up to: IV Antibiotics, feeding tubes, "room air" oxygen push, and in incubators to regulate their temperatures. Sebastian ends up under the Bilirubin light for a few days to fight Jaundice.
WEEK 1 - Major Progress!
Antibiotics ceased, Oxygen tubes removed, no more bili lights, and we're kangaroo holding - which is skin-to-skin holding. Keegan snuggles in, while Sebastian licks me until he falls asleep.
12/19/13
Both boys only have feeding tubes, though they are breast & bottle feeding when they have the energy. They have also been moved to open air cribs!
Week 2
Noticing the world around them, working on weight gain and consistency, and wearing clothes!!! Keegan meets Weston through a glass window and slightly open door first, and then on Christmas Eve Weston and our nieces meet both babies through the glass window. My Dad and brother hold them for the first time.
12/26/13 - My Birthday!
Still working on growing and eating, maintaining body temp, and not having any "spells" - once they reach these goals, they can go home!
1/4/14
Sebastian came home 12/31/13, and Keegan joined him on 1/4/14. finally, our family under 1 roof, and no need to leave the house in awful weather to venture to the NICU.
1/12/14
They are thriving! Both are gaining weight, but still not sleeping for long.
2 Months Old!!! 2/12/14
Photo shoot courtesy of Tylenol and 8 wk vaccinations.
2/14/14
Happy Valentine's Day from Aunt Shannon and soon-to-be-Uncle Bill.
Weston is in love with his baby brothers.
2/20/14 - Time has flown by and these boys have grown by leaps and bounds. They've doubled their body weights and added 2+ inches to their lengths. They're smiling and amazing. Keegan developed a Hemangioma - a birthmark that appears as a rubbery, bright red nodule of extra blood vessels in the skin. It grows for the first year of life and then fades until there is little to no trace of it. It really came in handy for telling them apart for the first few weeks at home. :)
2/20/14 - Synagis Vaccinations #2
Because they were preemies, our boys had to get what is more commonly known as RSV vaccinations. They got mailed to us directly and a home health nurse (Laura) would come out and administer them. So, here they are waiting for their shots just after being weighed. I swear Sebastian knows exactly what is going on.
Whenever these boys are too fussy, we strip them. Just like their big brother, being naked calms them down. the hate being too warm. Weston will take any excuse to remove his clothes.
We had pictures taken at the hospital on 12/31/13, you know, the ones where they visit in the first days after birth? Or in our case, almost 3 weeks after birth. We had to wait until they were both healthy enough to leave their NICU room. I had this print made at Shutterfly.
Naked Baby Time! Taking advantage of an outfit change and a 60 degree day.
For the baby shower thrown by my sister, guests were encouraged to design onesies. Our nieces made 2 of my faves - Sebastian is wearing Zoey and Keegan is wearing Paisley.
Keegan's hand in mine. I think baby hands just might be my favorite body part. And his are so perfect! And huge for his size!

3/12/14 - Our babes are 3 months old today! they offer smiles and coos, they love to be held and cuddled. Both are doing really well.
Our babies caught the cold bug that Weston and I've had. Keegan had it the worst at first with a bad cough. Sebastian's popped up again this past weekend, and mine came back with a vengeance. These Rock-N-Sleep things from Fisher Price have been a lifesaver. I wish I had one with Weston.
Weston had Dr. Seuss week at school. Monday was Red Fish, Blue Fish day. So we made him a shirt using his hand prints a la Pinterest. He wanted his brothers to match, and they were quickly growing out of these.
3/8/14 - almost 3 Months!
We had their 3 month pictures taken at Target, and then had family pictures taken as well. (see the left sidebars.)
We baptized our babies at St. Paul Lutheran on 3/15/14. I forgot to charge the battery on my camera, so this is what I have until I collect from everyone else. It was another hard time without Mom, but Dad put on a brave face and really enjoyed his grandsons. We had a great evening with both sides of the family and our friends.
3/16/14 - Sunday brunch with Scott's family. Sebastian is not thrilled about the layers in his outfit, how his cold is progressing, or the fact that I am posing him without the bottle in his mouth. He got over it, and never really did cry.
This is the background on my phone's lock screen. It's basically a week in pictures. Papa and Keegan, Sebastian's selfie that he messaged to my friend Tuesday morning. Keegan's selfie that he instagrammed so he wouldn't be forgotten (As if!!!), and my Jones' Boys in their St. Patrick's gear. The Itty Bits are actually wearing Weston's hand-me-down tees from 2009. No idea how tight they must have fit him!

This is 3/21/14 - finally wearing the Owl hats I had made for them - and of course it's almost spring. :)

the coming End of a Battle

"Love does not begin and end the way we seem to think it does.
Love is a battle, Love is a war; Love is growing up."
- James A. Baldwin

I have no idea who James A. Baldwin is... but I like his thoughts.

I feel ravaged from Battle... and yet, I know that so much more is going to come.

I haven't written; I didn't know how. I still have a hard time putting anything into coherent sentences.

My Mom is dying.

She was released from the hospital 10 days ago, to basically go home and succumb to the infection that she contracted in the hospital. There was nothing more that they could do, so they unplugged her from the IVs and platelets and medications, and that was that.

Since she felt great, we met her at Riverside Casino for an afternoon of her favorite hobby. And she and Dad won pretty well too - which helped in their visits to the casino since (2 or 3 more times, I've lost track.) But things...

I'm just going to post this as is... interrupted and all.
So much has happened since I started this post, and I will need time to process my next post. I know this doesn't answer any pending questions, but it is what it is.

"LoverLove does not begin and end the way we seem to think it does. Love is a battle, love is a war; love is a growing up.

What it takes to get to a New Year

We had a very long, but very good Christmas with both sides of our families. I forgot to take the camera to Cherokee for the Jones Christmas, but suffice it to say that we all came home spoiled.  Here are some of my favorite pictures from our holidays, all taken with my new DSLR Canon Rebel T3 camera, which is a learning experience:

Christmas Morning 2012
As you can see, we had a wonderful holiday. Scott worked ridiculously hard over the holiday week - it's high Liquor season in Iowa, so he was working as many as 15 hours a day. We traveled to Cedar Rapids on Saturday, Dec. 22nd. On Sunday, we all traveled to DeWitt, Iowa for the Dalton Family Christmas. It was a lot of fun seeing the extended family, but Scott had to leave at 4:30 and make the 3 hour drive back to Des Moines all alone, while Shannon, Weston and I went back to CR with the family. We celebrated Christmas Eve at Aunt Linda's, with Weston anxiously waiting for his cousins to arrive. Scott worked all day Christmas Eve and drove back to CR, arriving after midnight - making for a very long day. Christmas Day was spent at our parents' house. It was chaotic and somewhat tense, and just crazy. As all family holidays end up being. Mom wiped the floor with all of us at our family Dice games - and that just drove us all crazy.  ;)
I turned 33 years old on the 26th. Ugh - mid-thirties... I wish you would love me more. But we all celebrated with Burgers and such at north end Field House pub, a great Iowa Hawkeyes hangout in Cedar Rapids. It was fun. We ended up back at Mom's for homemade birthday cakes for both Nathan and I (his 30th birthday is Jan. 4th.) Gifts were exchanged, and wonderful! Nathan and his family headed East, while my little group headed West - back to work we went.
This past weekend, we enjoyed our family Christmas with Scott's family. We couldn't travel until Saturday due to additional snow and ice on Friday. But it was a lot of fun. I think the Lumberjack Beanie cap with the attached crocheted beard that I got Scott's great-nephew Dalton, was the most talked-about gift! It was hilarious!
New Years was another low-key event. Scott once again had to work all day, and into the evening on New Years Eve. Shannon and I took Weston to see Rise of the Guardians - which was awesome! He and I then went to an early dinner with our friends, and enjoyed a mini game night at their house. We made it home by 9:00 to ring in the New Year with Scott - twice. Once at 11pm, thinking Weston was going to crash, and again at midnight as I was crawling into bed with a suddenly wide-awake little boy. Today, 1/1/2013 has been more low-key. In fact, if it weren't for the Rose Bowl Parade, the Shrimp Cocktail, and the Welches Sparkling Grape Juice, I'd have thought it was a Sunday. Though I'm so glad that today is Tuesday, and we have have a short work week, with a boring weekend at home. It's nice to have no plans.
I hope that 2013 brings health and happiness to everyone reading this. I hope that it brings you new possibilities.
For my family, I hope that 2013 brings a new baby into our family. I hope that my sister finds someone worthy of her love and partnership. I hope that my brother and his family find peace and a place to settle into a new healthy, happy life. I hope that my mom continues to be cancer-free, and that she and my Dad enjoy their life. I hope that my Uncle David finds good health and healing from 2012, and that he and my Aunt Linda continue to enjoy the life that they have made. I hope that Scott's nephew Jeremy and his wife Charlie welcome a healthy baby in the coming weeks. This pregnancy has been hard on Charlie and I hope that everything from here on out gets easier for them. I wish for health and happiness for both extended sides of our families, those in NW Iowa, and those in Texas, Georgia, and New Jersey.
For my friends, I wish health and happiness. For our friends April and Glen, I wish a successful and wonderful birth of their first baby in the next few weeks. (Can't wait to meet that baby!) For our other friends, I wish babies in their future just as much as I wish for a baby in our family. For all others, I wish health and happiness.
Ok... enough of the novel. I hope 2013 is a great year for us all!

Fun new iPhone apps, using Halloween 2012 as inspiration!

Halloween 2012 seemed to go on forever!
This year, we visited the Blank Park Zoo for their Night Eyes event. For a small amount of money, we got to Trick or Treat at the Zoo! Each of us, including adults, got a bag full of candy, and we saw the few animals that could handle our cold weather. Weston wanted Scott to be a frog, and me to be a "One-Eyed Girl Monster." As promised, here's a picture. I built these 2 costumes in about 3 days. Not bad. I think I was channeling Celia from Monsters, Inc. minus the snakes.  We had planned on wearing the costumes again on Beggar's Night here in Des Moines, but it was too cold. (Beggar's Night is what the locals call Trick or Treating, and it's rarely on October 31st. This year it was on the 30th.)

the Frog, One-Eyed Girlie Monster, and Captain America at Night Eyes in the Blank Park Zoo. 10/19/12
So, between Beggar's Night and the actual day of Halloween, we had a lot of fun. But, I also received my new iPhone 4 upgrade from AT&T. I thought it would be cooler than it was, but it wasn't. Apparently the phone I wanted was the iPhone 4S. I didn't get Siri or any of the cool upgrades. In fact, the only improvement over my iPhone 3G was the 5 mega pixel camera with flash and front lens, a huge improvement over the lens-less 1.2 mega pixel camera on the 3G. So, to get over my disappointment, I downloaded some new Apps. These 3 apps were recommended by a website reference on Pinterest. I combined all of our activities over 2 days, including the pictures my brother shared of my nieces!
  •  PicFrame - you guessed it... It creates frames! Which I've been trying to figure out for months! you can changes the qty and ratio of sizes, colors, etc.
  • Phonto - This allows for type or symbols to be added to any photo/project. It's got a great choice of fonts, colors, sizes, etc.
  • Picfx - this one lets you edit square pictures by using a variety of filters... and you can layer the filters too! I really like the Vintage set, and the Light set which gives me the fun flashes of light, including the small hearts I used with the girls.
  • Postagram - This may be the coolest one! This allows you to send a Postcard with a removable "Instagram" type photo (or any below) to anyone who can receive snail mail. You create a stamp, add a small comment, and off it goes. I sent the one of the 3 great-grandkids from Halloween to my grandparents in San Antonio. Cost - $0.99 each, but you get 5 for free when you sign up!
My first "frame"! Clockwise from top right: My Halloween headband, Paisley dressed as Strawberry Shortcake, Weston as Captain America, Zoey as Miss Frankie Stein (Monster High), Trick or Treating with Weston's friend Lily, and my fuchsia lace tights and (according to Weston) witch shoes.

I framed and used the "small hearts" filter from PicFx to create this collage of my nieces for my brother. I texted it to him so he could load it on his Facebook page.

This is the Postagram picture that I framed and used Phonto to add the text and the stars to send as a postcard via snail mail to my grandparents in San Antonio.

I am loving these new apps!!! And I will be upgrading my music to Spotify probably tonight or tomorrow so that I can have more room on the this phone. Right now, I can't even take pictures, I am out of so much room.

Sister, Sister

Shannon in the door to the Scottish Rites Temple,
TANGO August 2010
And I am not talking about the show with Tia and Tamera Mowry from the 90s. I'm talking about my SeaStar, my other half, my true bff, my ovary-twin. My third Greatest Love, my sister Shannon.

Baby Shannon's 1st Birthday, 1985
Nathan, 2 yrs, Shannon, 1 yr, Erin, 5 yrs
The earliest memory I have of my sister Shannon is March or April of 1984, Corpus Christi, Texas. She was less than 8 weeks old. I was 4 years old. Nathan was 15 months old. My Grandma, Aunt and Uncle had come done to visit the new baby. And they were taking me back to Iowa with them. I was convinced that my parents didn’t want me anymore, that I was too old. So they were giving me away. I remember little Nathan and Baby Shannon sitting on the couch, or laying on it. I remember whispering to them that I loved them, and that I was sorry that I had to go. That it wasn’t my choice. I begged them not to forget me (how could they even remember me at that age?) And I kissed them goodbye. I never once asked my parents what was going on. They would have told me that I’d see them soon. Anyway, away we went. And I am convinced that I made myself sick because sometime around Oklahoma I got a fever and a sore throat. By the time we reached Iowa, I was so sick they had to admit me to the hospital for 5 days. I had a Peritonsular Abscess. My tonsils were swollen to the point of touching. They were not removed, just IV antibiotics and fluids. So… that memory is a little traumatizing. My parents came to Iowa with the little kids in May. I was fine by then, and when they left, I went home with them to Texas.

Shannon -2, Erin - 6, Nathan -3

Shannon was the best baby doll on the planet. My friend Laura and I used to dress her up and play with her. She used to do anything we asked, which was a great game at 6 years old. She was my shadow, and by the time she was six herself, she was my best playmate.

Around middle school, I was tired of my shadow - In public anyway. When you’re 13, the last thing you want is your 9 yr old sister hanging around. I don’t remember much about that time, but knowing me, I’m petty sure I hurt her feelings. A lot.
I remember the day Shannon became my friend. And to be honest, it was by force and guilt. Picture this: July 4th, 1996, it’s dark and warm, and we’re getting ready for the fireworks. My girlfriends and I were finally 16 years old, and we planned to watch the fireworks down on the river (the river is the Mississippi River for those of you asking.) Shannon was 12 years old and wanted to tag along. I put my foot down and said No. And then Shannon cried. She cried to our mom and Aunt Linda who both cornered me, and got mad at me. They talked to my friends who all said it was ok that Shannon could come (mainly because they just wanted to leave, and because she wasn’t their sister, so they loved her.) So, Shannon came along. And I sulked. I wouldn’t talk to her, and she didn’t seem to notice. Because she was having a great time! She was being funny and friendly while I was sitting there by myself. I let my feelings of anger ruin what was a great night for everyone else around me.
Chin Chin - New York New York, Las Vegas, March 2011
After that, Shannon fit seamlessly into my group of friends. When she had time, she hung out with us, and it was never uncomfortable. My bff Anousha’s sister Erika is a year younger than Shannon and they became good friends, making it easier to hang out. And we had a pretty good time, especially my last year in high school.
When I went to college, I missed my family terribly. I was so homesick that I didn’t think I would make it. And Shannon was on of the reasons why. I missed her. More than I ever thought possible. I called home a lot. My sorority helped me to stay in school (read previous post.) But Shannon spent her Spring Break in the dorms with me. In fact, she spent almost part of every Spring Break with me during her years in High School.
Shannon's love - Jerry Orbach;
Carnegie Deli @ the Mirage, Las Vegas 2011
Shannon started her college career at Drake in 2002. We overlapped for one semester and actually arranged to share one class. History. And it was fun. Though Shannon wouldn’t agree with me on that one. I moved to Sioux City April 2, 2003. To be with Scott, and I thought it would be ok because Shannon was transferring to the University of Iowa in Iowa City. Those 18 months were some of the longest in my life. I had to have surgery in April 2004. Shannon came to be with me. She was just 20 years old. And she took care of me.
Shannon was my Maid of Honor at our wedding October 30, 2004. I couldn’t imagine anyone else standing right beside me. Scott knew that by marrying me, he was also getting a sister. He just never knew how much. Shannon’s engagement was broken in the spring of 2005. Having her hurt so badly was one the lowest points of my life. Not knowing how to fix it, how to make her feel better, it was almost more than I could handle. But Shannon handled it. And if she could be so graceful and classy, the least I could do was stand by her side and hold her hand. Shannon moved to Des Moines after she graduated college. And I’ve rarely been happier. For the last six years, Shannon and I have spent Tuesdays and Thursdays together when possible. As well as some weekends. Scott essentially has two wives, and most of the time he is ok with that.
Auntie Shannon with newborn Weston, 8/1/08
Shannon has been with me through all the important points of my life. Getting married, infertility, pregnancy – I found out I was pregnant in Shannon’s bathroom! She was with us when we found out Weston was a boy and not the girl I thought he was. She is probably the only person who knows every emotion I am feeling and every thought going through my head without thinking. I trust my life with her, but more importantly, I trust my child with her. She is his Godmother after all.

Today is Shannon’s 28th birthday. I can’t think of a better day to pay tribute to one of the Greatest Loves of my life. We joke that we are Ovary Twins, separated as eggs by 4 years and Nathan, while waiting to be conceived. If you ask her, we look very little alike. If you ask anyone else, we’re almost the same, though a lot of that is mannerisms and speech. Shannon is one of the strongest, kindest, and most intuitive people I have ever met. I don’t think I could survive in a world where Shannon isn’t in it. She’s my best friend; My other half. And even if I don’t say it, I am thankful every single day to be in a world with my SeaStar!
